The art of watering

The most common mistake beginners make is overwatering. It’s easy to assume more water equals a happier plant, but in reality, most houseplants prefer their soil to dry out slightly between waterings. A simple trick is to stick your finger about an inch into the soil—if it feels dry, it’s time to water.

Another essential is using pots with proper drainage. Without drainage holes, excess water has nowhere to go, which can lead to root rot—a common issue that can quickly damage or kill a plant.

Consistency also matters more than perfection. Plants tend to do best in stable environments, so try to avoid placing them near vents, heaters, or drafty windows where temperatures fluctuate. Once you find a good spot, your plant will usually adapt and settle in.
