The first thing to know is that not all light is the same. Most houseplants are typically grouped into three categories: low light, medium (or bright indirect) light, and high (direct) light. Low-light plants can tolerate dimmer spaces like corners or rooms with north-facing windows, while high-light plants—like succulents—need strong, direct sun for several hours a day. In between those extremes is bright indirect light, which is where most common houseplants thrive.
Bright indirect light simply means your plant is near a window where it gets plenty of illumination, but the sun’s rays aren’t hitting the leaves directly for long periods. A good way to think of it is this: if the room feels bright and you can comfortably read without turning on a light, your plant is likely getting enough indirect light.
One of the most helpful skills you can develop as a plant owner is simply learning to observe. Plants are surprisingly good at signaling when something isn’t right. If a plant isn’t getting enough light, you might notice slow growth or long, “leggy” stems stretching toward a light source. On the other hand, too much direct sun can cause leaves to look faded, scorched, or crispy.
Instead of aiming for perfection right away, think of plant care as a process of small adjustments. Moving a plant just a few feet closer to a window—or slightly farther away—can make a noticeable difference over time.
